Driver's License

The first step in getting your Hawaii driver's license is obtaining an instruction permit. You can apply for an instruction permit once you have reached 15 ½ years of age. To receive your permit, you will have to pass a vision test and written knowledge test. This exam is designed to demonstrate your understanding and knowledge of Hawaii's traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations, as well as on safe driving techniques, highway and road signs, and other appropriate subject matters. Once you receive your permit, it will be valid for one year; you can apply for a restricted license at age 16, though you must possess your permit for at least six months.

To study for your exam or your Hawaii driver's license practice test, use our Cheat Sheets. We are confident that it will help you pass on your first try! What's the risk?

Hawaii Commercial Driver's License

In the State of Hawaii, applicants for a CDL permit must be at least 21 years old and possess a valid Hawaii driver's license (please take this into consideration - there is no intrastate option for individuals 18-21 years of age). You will then be required to self-certify the type of license that you are seeking, as well as any additional endorsements you may be interested in. This will determine which written exams you will have to take. Once you have made these declarations, you can take the written CDL test.

The knowledge exams - one for your CDL class and one each for any endorsements - cover traffic laws, trucking regulations, safe driving techniques, road signage, and other specifically related topics. To prepare for these exams, we encourage you to take a Hawaii driver's license practice test and give our Cheat Sheets a try. The commercial driver's manual is more like a small text book than a study guide, and retaining information can be a real challenge.
