Illinois Motorcycle License

There are two types of motorcycle license that a person can get in Illinois: Class L and Class M. With a Class L license, riders are limited to motor-driven cycles of less than 150cc engine displacement. Riders who receive a Class M license can operate motorcycles with greater than 150cc engine displacement, which opens up a much greater range of opportunities. Be sure that you know which type of motorcycle license you need before going through the process.

First-time applicants who do not have a current Illinois driver's license must take a written exam and a drive exam. The written portion of the test includes both basic and motorcycle-specific questions. If you do you have an Illinois license, you can also take the IDOT Motorcycle Rider Course. During this process, you will complete written exams on safe riding techniques, rules of the road, and more. With our motorcycle Cheat Sheets, you can take these tests with confidence!
