Commercial Driver's License

To apply for a commercial learner's permit in the State of Virginia, you must be at least 18 years of age and have a basic driver's license. If you want to operate commercial vehicles across state lines, you must be at least 21 years of age. This is important to know, as it can impact your career opportunities. In states like California and Texas, being limited to intrastate routes isn't as limiting as it is in states such as Maryland or Virginia. Being mindful of this will allow you to have realistic expectations when you look for a job.

Obtaining your CDL learner's permit requires passing a knowledge test. To pass this test, you must answer 80 percent of the questions correctly. Questions cover a range of topics, including safe operation of commercial vehicles, motor vehicle laws, and road signage. If you wish to get endorsements (for hazardous materials, for example), you will have to take separate knowledge tests for each endorsement you are seeking. You can study for this exam by taking a Virginia driver's license practice test or using the Virginia Commercial Driver's Manual. However, we recommend that you use our Cheat Sheet as well - it provides the same info in an easy-to-use format!
