The State of Tennessee has a graduated driver's license program. This program involves three phases of licensing. You can apply for your commercial driver's license (CDL) permit at age 18. It is important to note, however, that you will be limited to operating a commercial vehicle within the State of Tennessee until you reach 21 years of age. To obtain your permit, you will have to successfully complete the CDL general knowledge exam, which is given at full-service driver service centers throughout the state.
